Quilted Tablerunner with Applique-with-Organza Blocks

This quilted tablerunner is simple to put together and looks gorgeous. The organza used in the top creates an eye-catching shimmering effect, beautiful by candle- and sunlight.

We used the designs from the Applique-with-Organza Block Set for the large, 5" x 7", hoop.

The finished size is about 21" x 28".

You will need

  • embroidery supplies (see the instructions on how to embroider the blocks),
  • about 1 yard of fabric used as base and outer border (we used blue-gray),
  • about 1 yard of fabric of a contrasting color for applique and the first border (we used orange),
  • small amount of black or navy blue fabric for the second border
  • backing, binding and batting.

Embroidery:

Upload the files for the Applique-with-Organza Block Set into the machine. Embroider the designs one by one as described in the instructions.

After the embroidery is done, trim the blocks to 7 1/2" x 7 1/2" squares.

Cutting:

Out of the fabric for the first border, cut

  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 14 1/2", and
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 23 1/2"
Out of the fabric for the second border, cut
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 16 1/2", and
  • 2 strips measuring 1" x 24 1/2".

Out of the fabric for the outer border, cut
  • 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 17 1/2" and
  • 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 28 1/2".

Assembly of the Top:

Note: seam allowance is 1/4". Press every seam immediately after you make it.

Sew the squares in pairs. Then sew them together in 3 rows.

Quilting and Finishing:

Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all three layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted with a meandering pattern all over the quilt

After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam FROM THE BACK. Take care not to press the organza with a hot iron!

Square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.

Finish the raw edges with the binding.
